Following Manuel Neuer’s blunder in Augsburg, there’s been a lot of discussion about the starting goalkeeper. Sepp Maier strongly defends the Bayern captain—and puts the brakes on the Urbig hype.
The debate surrounding Manuel Neuer has gained new momentum following FC Bayern’s 2-2 draw at FC Augsburg. The 40-year-old made a serious mistake on the early 0-1 goal and didn’t look particularly comfortable on the second goal either. Since then, there has been increased discussion about whether Jonas Urbig could become the new number one sooner than previously planned.
Bayern legend Sepp Maier, however, doesn’t think much of this debate. In an interview with the Münchner Merkur , the former World Cup champion admitted that Neuer had made a mistake just a few seconds into the goal. “My God,” said Maier, “Manuel wasn’t focused; that was careless, and he knows it.”
For the 82-year-old, however, a single mistake is by no means a reason to question Neuer’s fundamental role at FC Bayern: “All this fuss just because he’s reached a certain age?” Maier asked, adding: “That’s utter nonsense! There are good and bad goalkeepers, but no ‘old’ ones.”
With that, Maier clearly opposes the recently growing calls for an immediate change in goal. Max Eberl, too, had recently come out in strong support of Neuer, emphasizing that the captain remains FC Bayern’s number one.
Maier also warns against too much Urbig euphoria
Maier also reminds everyone of what Neuer has accomplished during his long tenure at Bayern. The 2014 World Cup champion has won numerous titles and saved the club in many games. His message is accordingly clear: “All this grumbling, this discussion—it’s so typically German! Leave Manu alone!”

That’s why Maier would love to see Neuer back in goal right away. “It would be best if he were back in goal right away. And even better if he plays really well. Then the whole thing will be forgotten,” explained the Bayern icon.
However, Urbig will most likely start on Tuesday evening in the Champions League against Viking Stavanger, as Neuer, according to Bayern coach Kompany, “felt a little something in his foot.”
At the same time, Maier warns against declaring Urbig the new hope too quickly based on his recent performances. “Jonas Urbig is in his early 20s. You’re not doing him any favors by praising him to the skies right now,” said the former Bayern goalkeeper.
Maier is also cautious in his assessment of Urbig’s strong performances with the national team: “Yeah, what did he actually save? A few shots that were coming straight at the goal! Let him play a full season first before you start handing out accolades.”
