FC Bayern impressively won the top match in Leipzig and further extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga. In the 5:1 away win at the Red Bull Arena, the record champions turned around an interval deficit and played themselves into a frenzy after the break.
Munich did not get off to a good start in the match. Leipzig were bold from the outset, pressing high up the pitch and repeatedly putting Bayern under pressure. Nusa and Diomande posed an early threat down the left flank in particular. Manuel Neuer had to intervene several times in the early stages before the home side’s efforts paid off. In the 20th minute, David Raum played a sharp cross into the penalty area, where Rômulo reacted quicker than Jonathan Tah to slot home from close range for a deserved 1-0 lead.
Leipzig remained the more active team after that and could well have increased their lead before the break. Nusa missed a great chance in front of Neuer, Baumgartner missed from a good position. Bayern struggled to gain a foothold, looked unusually vulnerable defensively and went into the break trailing for the first time in this Bundesliga season.
Bayern turn up the heat after the break

After the break, the visitors looked transformed. With more control, greater pace and clearer build-up play, the Munich side increasingly forced Leipzig into their own half. The equaliser came in the 50th minute: Dayot Upamecano picked the ball off Baumgartner’s foot and immediately passed to Serge Gnabry, who kept his cool on the right side of the penalty area and slotted under Gulácsi to make it 1-1. It was a special goal for the attacking player – his 100th competitive goal in an FC Bayern shirt.
The league leaders kept the pressure on and Michael Olise, who came on as a second-half substitute, immediately injected new dynamism into the game. Bayern turned the game around completely in the 67th minute: Olise broke through on the right, crossed to the far post and, after Baku slipped, Harry Kane picked up the ball and finished from close range to make it 2-1. It was the Englishman’s 21st goal of the season.
After that, Leipzig’s resistance was broken. In the 82nd minute, Jonathan Tah headed in a corner from Olise to make it 3:1. Just three minutes later, the game was decided: Kane latched onto a long ball from his own half, Olise made a smart cross in the penalty area and Aleksandar Pavlovic slotted home to make it 4:1.
Jamal Musiala celebrated his comeback in the closing stages. The attacking player was substituted in the 87th minute and scored the final goal just one minute later: After an attack down the left, Musiala bounced the ball into Olise in the penalty area, who scored with his first touch from twelve meters to make it 5:1.
Bayern maintain huge lead over Dortmund
The away win takes FC Bayern to 50 points, leaving them without a defeat this season and restoring their lead over Borussia Dortmund to eleven points. Leipzig remain in fourth place with 32 points.
The Munich side will continue their Champions League campaign during the week, with a home game against Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday, before hosting FC Augsburg at the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga next weekend. RB Leipzig will play away at 1. FC Heidenheim on the next matchday.
