FC Bayern has submitted its roster for the new Champions League season to UEFA. There’s a small surprise: top prospect Lennart Karl is missing from the A-list. Instead, Sacha Boey is on the roster for the Champions League.
Now that the opponents in the Champions League have been determined, FC Bayern has announced its roster for the competition.
In total, the Munich club has nominated 24 players for the A-list, leaving one spot unfilled in the potential 25-man roster. Among the registered players are the three summer signings Nathaniel Brown, Ismael Saibari, and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye. Lennart Karl, however, is not on the A-list.
However, the fact that the youngster’s name does not appear on the list does not mean that the 18-year-old cannot play in the Champions League. The Bayern talent can be nominated for matches via the so-called B-list. This list is intended for young, locally trained players and offers the Munich club additional flexibility.
This means that despite his absence from the A-list, Karl remains an option for Vincent Kompany. The youngster recently made his comeback from injury in the Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart.
Boey makes a surprise appearance
The inclusion of Sacha Boey, on the other hand, comes as a much bigger surprise. The Frenchman had recently been considered a possible candidate for the cut, and his future with the record champions was in question, not least because of the fierce competition for the fullback positions. Nevertheless, he has now been included in the Champions League squad.
After a move to England fell through on transfer deadline day and the transfer windows in most leagues have closed, Galatasaray Istanbul remains the only potential destination for Boey. If a move to Turkey also falls through, the fullback will likely stay in Munich.
Serge Gnabry is also on the European roster following his prolonged injury. In addition, two other very young players—Maycon Cardozo and Bastian Assomo—are on the A-list.
