Jonas Urbig made his first competitive appearance of the new season on Wednesday during FC Bayern’s DFB Cup match in Osnabrück. More appearances are expected to follow. There is great anticipation as to whether Jürgen Klopp will soon call him up to the DFB team.
Some experts are skeptical, particularly given the division of roles at FC Bayern. Urbig is not the undisputed starting goalkeeper. This could also influence Klopp’s assessment.
The general consensus is that Urbig is definitely worth bringing along, but he isn’t quite ready to be the starting goalkeeper yet. The Bayern goalkeeper has now clarified that he has already had a conversation with the national team coach.
Klopp has already spoken with Urbig
Last Friday, Klopp was at the Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena; on Sunday, he watched FC Bayern’s training session from the sidelines. During that time, he apparently had a conversation with Jamal Musiala, and Klopp also spoke at length with coach Vincent Kompany.
But he also spoke with Urbig. The Bayern goalkeeper confirmed this after the match against Osnabrück. “It was a good conversation,” the Abendzeitung quotes the 23-year-old as saying, though he did not want to go into further detail about the content. After all: “That’s not a topic for now, right after the game, especially with the tough match at Schalke coming up. It won’t be a topic for another few weeks, when the squad announcement is due.”
However, it’s no secret that FC Bayern thinks highly of Urbig and is therefore grooming him to be Neuer’s successor. The starting goalkeeper is expected to end his career in 2027—that’s how things currently look. That’s another reason why Urbig is repeatedly being thrown into the deep end in Munich.
