Jamal Musiala impresses with consistently good performances at FC Bayern and in the German national team. He can no longer do anything with his former nickname „Bambi“.

After his steep development curve and strong performances in recent months, Jamal Musiala is taking on a different role at FC Bayern and in the national team.

Referring to his former nickname „Bambi“, the 21-year-old told Sport BILD: „I’m no longer the young player, I’m no longer Bambi. I have more responsibility in both teams. I’ve shed the status of the young super talent you have to look out for.“

Musiala wants to make more progress in the future, but added: „Nevertheless, I want to play with a relaxed attitude, have fun and radiate joy on the pitch like I did in my youth.“

Musiala on the number 10: „Really cool“

Musiala wore the legendary number 10 on his shirt for the first time in the international matches against France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1). He said: „I often played with the number 10 in the youth team, back then the shirt numbers were only allocated on match day. Sometimes I had to fight a bit for the 10. Now to see „10, Musiala“ on the European Championship jersey – that’s really cool.“

The attacking player added: „When I was a kid, Lionel Messi had the 10, Ronaldinho too, and before that legends like Maradona and Lothar Matthäus. But the number won’t make me arrogant or think that it gives me a special status – on the contrary. It’s a challenge. I want to do it justice and approach the games in the same way as I would with the 14 or 42.“

The new shirt number is certainly also a reward for his performances this season. Musiala explained: „I feel that I’m playing my best football at the moment. Also with a view to the season as a whole. I realise that I’ve taken a step forward. I’m scoring the goals and getting the assists you need to get attention.“
