Manuel Neuer has dealt with injuries quite often this season. Most recently, a tendon strain in his foot sidelined him for an extended period. In the past few weeks, he has played only twice, against Arsenal and Atlético.
In the meantime, Neuer was replaced by Jonas Urbig. Most recently, it was reported that the Bayern goalkeeper’s persistent foot problems could lead to Urbig automatically seeing more playing time anyway.
And that’s exactly what happened today in Mainz. However, it didn’t happen from the start, as Neuer was on the field initially. The Bayern goalkeeper was injured shortly before halftime after flying past a free kick.
First update on Neuer
FC Bayern now has reason to worry about its veteran goalkeeper. It appears this could be a recurrence of his old injury. Already at halftime, co-commentator Mirko Slomka briefly spoke with Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, about Neuer’s condition. Eberl confirmed that there is definitely a problem with his foot again.
After the game, the FCB was already a small step further along. First, Joshua Kimmich was asked if he’d already received an update on Neuer from the locker room. “I heard he’s having an examination tonight. We’ll see after that. I don’t think it looks like he’ll be back in training very soon. When he has to leave the field, it usually means something’s wrong,” the midfielder said with concern.

Aaron Danks, who is currently serving as interim head coach in place of Vincent Kompany, also spoke about the goalkeeper after the game. A diagnosis isn’t available yet, but it could be soon.
„We need to take a closer look at it. It’s his foot again. We need the tests this evening to find out exactly what’s wrong with him. There’s still no clarity,” said Danks. At least there’s a two-week break coming up, as the national team players now have an international break ahead of them.
