Harry Kane’ s contract extension with FC Bayern hasn’t been met with universal enthusiasm. While the Munich club has sent an important signal by signing the English national team striker through 2029, Dietmar Hamann has expressed doubts about the long-term deal. Now, sporting director Christoph Freund has responded to the criticism.
Hamann described the decision to tie Kane down until 2029 as a significant risk, pointing in particular to Kane’s age—the Englishman would be 36 years old when the contract ends. From the TV expert’s perspective, this poses a certain risk should the striker’s physical condition decline in the coming years or should he lose his outstanding goal-scoring ability.
At the press conference ahead of the match against Mainz, Freund has now made it clear why Bayern’s management still stands fully behind its decision.
“We’re really happy and thrilled that the world’s best player right now has committed to FC Bayern. He feels extremely at home here—you can really sense that,” explained the sporting director.
For the Munich club, Kane is of enormous importance not only because of his athletic qualities but also because of his personality. The Englishman is an important part of the team and feels extremely at home in Munich with his family.
Freund is convinced of Kane’s ability
The Bayern official also emphasized that the 32-year-old has actually exceeded expectations since his move to Munich in the summer of 2023. “He has surpassed everything experts predicted,” Freund clarified.
The sporting director is also optimistic about the coming years. Kane possesses the necessary attitude and professionalism to continue performing at his exceptional level. “We are absolutely convinced that, with his attitude and personality, he will maintain his high level of play and be a great asset to us. If we weren’t convinced of that, we wouldn’t have extended his contract,” said Freund.

Club officials apparently do not view the contract extension through 2029 as an incalculable risk, but rather as a deliberate decision in favor of a player who enriches the club both on and off the field.
Freund made it clear that, ultimately, performance on the field is what matters most. “The truth lies on the field—I’m convinced he’ll continue to prove that in the coming years,” the Bayern boss emphasized, expressing his confidence.
