FC Bayern has set ambitious goals for the new season. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has now made it clear that the Munich team intends to compete for every title once again. In doing so, he reinforces a goal that head coach Vincent Kompany has already stated publicly on several occasions.
“Like every year, we want to win everything we can. It would be absurd to claim anything else this year. We want to win all the titles,” Dreesen explained, referring to the goals of Germany’s record-holding champion.
In doing so, the Bayern boss explicitly referred to Kompany. “The coach made that very clear, which was impressive. As CEO, I can only agree with that,” said Dreesen.
The ambition is thus clearly stated: Bayern not only wants to win the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup, but also to compete for the title in the Champions League right up to the end.
However, the fact that Kompany advocates for the highest possible standards is nothing new. Even before the start of the Champions League group stage, the Belgian made it clear that Bayern should not shy away from its grand goal.
Kompany doesn’t want to “hide”
“Bayern Munich is one of those ten teams in Europe that must always aim to win the Champions League. And I think it’s good to state that clearly and not hide behind it too much,” Kompany explained ahead of the opener against FK Bodø/Glimt.
In doing so, the Bayern coach is consciously backing the record champions’ ambition. Instead of lowering expectations, Kompany calls for the team to be open about its goal of winning the Champions League.
His latest statement also aligns with comments Kompany made during preseason. Already during the Asian tour in August, the Bayern coach had identified winning the Champions League as a clear goal.
“Right now, I’m saying our goal is to win the Champions League—there’s no doubt about that,” Kompany said at the time. Nothing seems to have changed in this regard at the record champions. In addition to the club’s leadership, players such as Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer have also expressed their desire to win the Champions League,
After a successful start to the Champions League season with a 5-1 win over Bodø/Glimt, Bayern must now live up to its high expectations on the field. The road to a potential title is still long, however—the record champions have at least already made their ambitions unmistakably clear.
