Harry Kane has broken his personal Bundesliga drought. In FC Bayern’s hard-fought 2-1 away win at SV Elversberg, the Englishman scored his first league goal of the new season—and it proved to be the game-winner.
The fact that Kane had to wait until the third matchday for his first Bundesliga goal is quite unusual by his standards. The 33-year-old had by no means played poorly beforehand. Against Stuttgart and Schalke, however, he lacked the necessary luck in front of the opponent’s goal.
In Elversberg, the moment finally arrived. With the score tied at 1-1, Kane was set up by Aleksandar Pavlovic in the penalty area and, in the 72nd minute, scored with a technically impressive finish to restore Bayern’s lead.
After the final whistle, the striker was asked about his brief scoring drought. Kane took it in his usual calm manner. “That’s soccer—sometimes you just have to wait a little bit. It was a very important goal, the one that secured the win today. It was a tough game; it’s not easy here,” Kane explained after the match.
Kane expects Bayern to be even stronger
The forward sees room for improvement not only in his own play but also in Bayern’s. In the Englishman’s view, Bayern are not yet performing at their highest level.
In his view, this also has to do with their unusual preseason. Several players didn’t fully return to training until late—either due to injuries or the high workload. Consequently, some players still need time to find their optimal rhythm.
However, Kane views the fact that the roster now offers significantly more options as a very positive development. The flexibility and quality on the bench, in particular, could become enormously important for Munich as the season progresses.
“When everyone is fit, that’s a positive, and it has a big impact on the team. Everyone who starts and everyone who comes off the bench can give 110%,” emphasized the Bayern star.
Bayern Is Gaining More and More Options
Just how important this depth on the roster can be was already evident in Elversberg. Vincent Kompany rotated players across several positions, initially leaving out Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Luis Díaz, and Jamal Musiala, among others. As the match progressed, the Bayern coach was able to make further adjustments with fresh legs.
In addition, more players are gradually returning. This intensifies competition for playing time and gives Kompany more options for managing the workload.
After three Bundesliga matches, Munich now has seven points. Their next home game is against Union Berlin this coming Friday, before the international break begins.
Until then, Bayern hopes to secure another victory. Kane is likely hoping that his goal in Elversberg marked the start of another scoring streak. After two scoreless Bundesliga matches, the striker has certainly broken his scoring drought.
