Arijon Ibrahimovic’s Bundesliga debut for FC Augsburg could hardly have gone better. The attacking player, on loan from FC Bayern, scored the crucial equalizer in the 4-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, played a key role in setting up another goal, and was subsequently voted Man of the Match by the fans.
Yet the match started anything but ideally for Augsburg. As early as the sixth minute, Jonathan Burkardt gave the visitors from Frankfurt a 1-0 lead. For a long time, FCA struggled to find an appropriate response.
After halftime, however, that changed abruptly—and Ibrahimovic played a decisive role. The Bayern loanee, who made his Bundesliga debut for Augsburg due to Anton Kade’s injury, needed just a few seconds after the restart to score his first goal.
In the 46th minute, a cross from Marius Wolf found him. Ibrahimovic held his ground and headed the ball into the net to make it 1–1. For the 20-year-old, it was the perfect debut with his new club.
Ibrahimovic sparked the complete turnaround
But that wasn’t all: Less than two minutes after his equalizer, Ibrahimovic was right back in the thick of the action. After a shot by the attacker, goalkeeper Noah Atubolu was unable to clear the ball decisively. Robin Fellhauer capitalized on the rebound and scored to make it 2–1.
In the blink of an eye, Augsburg had completely turned the game around. Ibrahimovic remained one of the most prominent players on the field afterward, repeatedly seeking a path to the opponent’s goal. With three shots on goal, he led the Augsburg team in that statistic.
Alexis Claude-Maurice finally made it 3–1 with a spectacular goal. In the closing stages, Fabian Rieder sealed the victory with a free kick, bringing the score to 4–1.
For Ibrahimovic, the afternoon got even better. The fans voted the Bayern loanee Man of the Match—a special honor in his first Bundesliga appearance for FCA.
Bayern loan pays off immediately
FC Bayern will likely be closely monitoring the attacking player’s progress. Ibrahimovic had completed preseason training in Munich before club officials decided to send him out on loan again. At FC Augsburg, his main goal is to gain playing time—something that was difficult to guarantee at the record-holding champions given the fierce competition.
His debut with his new club certainly offers cause for hope. Right from his very first opportunity, Ibrahimovic showed that he can make a difference in the Bundesliga.
The convincing victory was also a special one for Augsburg. After two matchdays, FCA has six points and sits atop the standings. For the first time in six seasons, the team from Augsburg has thus managed to start the season with two wins in its first two games.
