Despite a good summer of transfers last year and a satisfactory season in sporting terms, extending the contract of Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl is by no means a foregone conclusion. Now Uli Hoeneß has also commented on the issue
Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß has commented on the future of sporting director Max Eberl in the Spiegel interview. Although he gave him a positive testimonial, he avoided making a clear commitment for the time after his contract ends in 2027
He deliberately formulated his assessment openly – and with a remarkable weighting: there is a tendency „60:40 in favour of an extension“, Hoeneß made clear. At the same time, he made it clear that the decision is far from being made, because „there are still doubts.“ The Eberl personnel issue will therefore remain a central topic at Säbener Straße in the coming weeks and months
From the summer onwards, the question of the future will inevitably come more into focus – not least because, contractually, talks about an extension can only be held from 1 July. Eberl himself has recently left no doubt that he can imagine a long-term perspective in Munich: „It wasn’t easy at the beginning. But now we have got very, very good things on the way,“ the sporting director recently explained
Decision in August – Hoeneß holds back
Eberl also formulated his position clearly and performance-related: „They should evaluate my job. And if they think my job is good, then I am also prepared to stay at Bayern for longer.“
Even though Hoeneß sees Eberl as a manager „who has played a big part in our success this season“, he does not want to go into any further detail. „I don’t want to go into details now, I’ll leave that to our discussion in the supervisory board,“ said the honorary president
The personnel issue is likely to be on the agenda at the supervisory board meeting in August – with a fundamental question that goes far beyond a mere contract extension. It must then be decided „whether Max Eberl is the manager who should lead FC Bayern into the future.“
