According to information from TEAMtalk, Kompany is considered one of the top candidates to succeed Pep Guardiola as coach at Manchester City.
It is hardly surprising that the Belgian is being talked about again in Manchester. Few former players enjoy such a high standing at the Citizens as Kompany, who won four Premier League titles as captain and became the face of the club’s most modern era. He is now expected to play a central role in the club’s plans for the post-Guardiola era.
Kompany is a Guardiola candidate – despite contract until 2029
Kompany extended his contract at FC Bayern on a long-term basis until 2029 just a few weeks ago, but Manchester City are said to be convinced that the 39-year-old would be open to returning to the bench at the Etihad Stadium one day.
The Citizens are said to be keeping a close eye on Kompany’s development in Munich. The interest is also fuelled by the growing uncertainty surrounding Guardiola’s future: English media have repeatedly reported that the Spaniard could leave his club as early as next summer – even though he is still tied to the club until 2027. However, Guardiola has never terminated a contract prematurely to date.
FC Bayern are taking the rumors in their stride, with sporting director Max Eberl finding unusually emotional words about his coach this week: „We experience Vincent Kompany’s work every day – and seeing it up close is even more impressive than looking at it from the outside.“
Eberl knows exactly what Kompany’s success means: if a Bayern coach works, he automatically becomes interesting for the most financially strong clubs in Europe. But the sporting director also emphasized that Kompany has fully arrived at FCB and is pursuing long-term plans together with the club.
Why Kompany’s departure is unlikely
Although there is speculation around the Citizens that Kompany could answer the „call of home“ at some point, there is also a clear assessment that he is currently fully focused on Bayern.
Despite all the speculation, a move in the summer of 2025 would be extremely unlikely. This is supported by several factors: Kompany has only just signed a long-term contract. He is also playing for titles at Bayern and is shaping a sporting project in development. Last but not least, he has the full backing of the club and has played a key role in stabilising the sport.
What’s more, leaving just a few months after signing his contract would be completely at odds with Kompany’s philosophy of providing his teams with continuity and development.
