The Champions League is returning to Munich for its grand final. In 2028, the final will once again be held at the Allianz Arena.
It’s now official: The 2028 UEFA Champions League final will take place at the Allianz Arena. This means that just three years after hosting the 2025 final, Munich has once again been awarded the right to host the most important match in European club soccer.
The Bavarian capital had recently submitted an official bid to host the event. The Munich City Council had already approved the bid. It is now confirmed that the bid was successful and that the Champions League will once again crown its champion in Munich in 2028.
For FC Bayern, the decision is likely to hold a special appeal. After all, it gives the German record champions another chance at a true “Finale dahoam” (home final).
2028 presents Bayern with its next big opportunity
The Allianz Arena was already the venue for a Champions League final involving FC Bayern in 2012. Back then, the Munich team actually reached the final in their own stadium, but ultimately lost to Chelsea FC in a penalty shootout. The term “Finale dahoam” has been inextricably linked to that bitter night ever since.
In 2025, the Champions League final returned to Munich for the first time since then. However, FC Bayern missed the chance to reach the final on home turf. Now, the next opportunity is coming up as early as 2028.
The fact that Munich has once again been selected underscores the importance of the Allianz Arena as a venue for major international soccer matches. In addition to the 2012 and 2025 Champions League finals, the stadium has hosted matches from the 2020 and 2024 European Championships, among others.
Of course, FC Bayern still has a long way to go before a possible third “Finale dahoam.” But the prospect alone is likely to provide extra motivation in Munich: In the 2027–28 season, the dream of a Champions League triumph in their own stadium could become a reality once again.
