The search for a suitable Bayern coach for the coming season is proving complicated. Lothar Matthäus has now crossed the next name off his personal list of candidates.

In addition to Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton & Hove Albion, another Italian has been brought into discussion at FC Bayern: Antonio Conte. However, as Lothar Matthäus explains in an interview with BILD, the ex-Tottenham coach is „a big name with a lot of experience“, but „also a difficult character“. The club legend therefore categorically rules out the 54-year-old’s involvement with Bayern.

„The new coach must suit Bayern. He must not just stubbornly want to go his own way. At Bayern Munich, you have to communicate, the coach is not the most important man,“ Matthäus continued: „In England, the coach has a different position, he is the manager. But a coach has to abide by the rules here when he comes to us in the Bundesliga.“

Nagelsmann, De Zerbi or Ten Hag after all?

Even though Antonio Conte already has four Italian and one English championship to his name, Lothar Matthäus is not the only one who believes that there are better coaches for FC Bayern. Julian Nagelsmann, who has impressed the bosses with his work at the DFB, remains a candidate who is highly favoured by Bayern. According to BILD, the national coach himself can also imagine a comeback to the Isar. However, sporting director Max Eberl is apparently particularly enthusiastic about Roberto De Zerbi. According to Sky, he is a big supporter of the Italian head coach.

Erik Ten Hag is another Premier League coach who might have at least faint hopes of a job with the German record champions. According to kicker, the Manchester United head coach still has an outside chance, not least because he has already worked at Säbener Straße. He coached FC Bayern’s second team between 2013 and 2015.
