Speculation surrounding the future of Xabi Alonso continues to keep the football world busy. FC Bayern and Liverpool FC in particular are rumoured to be the biggest suitors for the Spaniard. Now there are rumours about a possible transfer request from Alonso. According to the rumours, the 42-year-old would like to continue working with DFB youngster Florian Wirtz in the future.

As the Spanish portal Defensa Central claims to have learnt, Alonso will demand the immediate transfer of Florian Wirtz from his new employer should he actually leave Leverkusen. The German international could cost the club in question more than 100 million euros. Alonso is a big fan of the 20-year-old, who has made a huge leap in performance under his management this season.

FC Bayern have been linked with Wirtz for some time. The fact that FCB could now potentially kill two birds with one stone by signing Alonso is fuelling the fantasies of fans and experts alike. But it’s not just Bayern, other European heavyweights such as Liverpool and Manchester City have also been rumoured as possible new sporting homes for Wirtz.

Wirtz tends to stay at Leverkusen

However, those responsible at Bayer have repeatedly emphasised that the departure of their jewel in the summer of 2024 is out of the question. Hans-Joachim Wirtz, the player’s father and advisor, has also confirmed that his son Florian will continue to wear the Leverkusen jersey next season. Nevertheless, the door remains open for speculation.

Wirtz has played 26 games for the Bundesliga leaders this season. He scored 7 goals and set up a further 10. The creative midfielder has played a decisive role in the Werkself’s strong season. Coach Xabi Alonso’s side are still unbeaten this season and are also in a promising title position in three competitions. Wirtz is also seen as the German national team’s main hope for the upcoming home European Championships.
