Xabi Alonso is currently one of the most sought-after coaches in European football. The 42-year-old Basque can effectively choose his new club in the summer. According to the latest reports, all interested clubs are waiting for a signal from Alonso – including FC Bayern.
Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß publicly confirmed this week that the Munich club are working on signing Xabi Alonso. However, the 42-year-old also made it clear that this would not be an easy endeavour, as other top clubs such as Liverpool FC are also interested in the Leverkusen head coach.
Alonso himself remains silent about his sporting future or does not wish to comment on it at the moment. Interestingly, as BILD head of football Christian Falk reports in his column for CaughtOffside, there is less and less belief in the industry that Alonso will move to Liverpool in the summer.
How long will Bayern wait for Alonso?
According to information from Sky, Bayern are already holding initial talks with Alonso’s management in the background. Munich have made their interest very clear. According to the pay-TV channel, Alonso is leaning towards a move to Munich should he decide to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. However, Bayern have not yet received a clear signal from Alonso, according to Falk.
Even though Liverpool are currently behind Bayern in the race for Alonso, there is another threat to the Munich side and that is Real Madrid. According to Falk, it cannot be ruled out that Alonso will fulfil his contract in Leverkusen until 2026 and then move to the Whites to take over from Carlo Ancelotti. According to the report, Alonso is attracted by the prospect of playing for a top club in his native Spain.
From Bayern’s point of view, one thing is clear: even if Alonso is the absolute favourite candidate at Säbener Straße, Munich cannot and do not want to wait too long for the Basque. FCB is planning a major personnel shake-up in the summer and needs clarity and planning security in the coaching position.
