FC Bayern has been without its head coach, Vincent Kompany, for quite some time. The Belgian is suffering from meningitis and was treated at a hospital after collapsing on the club’s grounds.
His recovery has been progressing steadily since then. In recent days, there have been several positive reports regarding his progress. Everyone at the record-holding champions agrees that Kompany should not return to work until there is no longer any risk and he has fully recovered.
It’s no surprise that it’s difficult to keep Kompany away from work. Right now, the focus is more on reining the Belgian in, which is why the record champions have issued an internal directive prohibiting staff from discussing soccer-related matters with the coach.
Kompany’s return remains uncertain
Most recently, there have been reports suggesting that a return is theoretically possible after the international break, against 1. FC Köln. Aaron Danks, Kompany’s representative, also provided a positive update around the time of the match in Mainz (2–1), noting that the head coach is doing better and better and appears to be getting fitter.
That’s definitely good news. However, everyone in charge is being cautious and wants to proceed as carefully as possible so as not to rush Kompany’s return.
And the doctors have not yet given the green light for him to resume training, as Max Eberl, Bayern’s sporting director, has now confirmed once again. “Vinnie is clearly on the road to recovery. Nevertheless, we still have to wait for the doctors’ green light before we let him back to Säbener Straße,” said Eberl.
Given how cautiously FC Bayern is currently handling the Kompany situation, it’s safe to assume that his return to Säbener Straße will be backed up by thorough medical examinations. The fact that international matches are coming up first and Bayern is under no time pressure—since hardly any players are staying in Munich anyway—also plays a role.
