It’s one of those nights that will likely remain forever linked to FC Bayern. On September 22, 2015, Robert Lewandowski made Bundesliga history against VfL Wolfsburg. It took the then-Bayern striker just 8 minutes and 59 seconds to score five goals.
Yet at halftime, nothing hinted at a historic evening. VfL Wolfsburg led 1–0 at the Allianz Arena. Pep Guardiola reacted by bringing Lewandowski on for Thiago Alcántara in the second half.
What happened next was something even Guardiola probably wouldn’t have thought possible. Within just a few minutes, Lewandowski single-handedly turned a deficit into a decisive Bayern victory.
Five goals in nine minutes
In the 51st minute, Lewandowski first scored the equalizer. Shortly afterward, he made it 2–1. But the Pole had only just gotten started.
In the 55th, 57th, and finally the 60th minute, Lewandowski struck again. In exactly 8 minutes and 59 seconds, the substitute striker had found the back of the net five times. Bayern ultimately won the match 5-1—all of Munich’s goals were scored by the Polish forward.

Not only were the goals legendary, but so were the reactions on the Bayern bench. At one point, Guardiola stood on the sideline with both hands on his head, barely able to believe what his striker was doing on the field.
Lewandowski set several records that evening. It took him just 3 minutes and 22 seconds to score his hat trick. He scored his first four goals within 5 minutes and 42 seconds.
Those records still stand eleven years later
The magnitude of this achievement is particularly evident in the fact that these records still stand eleven years later. No player in the Bundesliga has ever scored three, four, or five goals in a single game faster. Additionally, Lewandowski was the first substitute in Bundesliga history to score five goals in a single game.
His extraordinary performance earned him four entries in the Guinness Book of World Records.
However, there was one Bundesliga record Lewandowski couldn’t break that evening. The record for the most goals scored by a single player in a single match still belongs to Dieter Müller. The then-striker for 1. FC Köln scored six times in a 7–2 victory over Werder Bremen in 1977.
For Bayern, September 22, 2015, remains one of the most extraordinary evenings in the club’s history. Even eleven years later, Lewandowski’s nine minutes against Wolfsburg have lost none of their fascination.
