Robert Lewandowski has long since moved on from both FC Bayern and FC Barcelona. Financially, however, his transfer between the two European powerhouses continues to be a matter of concern for the clubs. According to the Catalans’ latest financial report, more than 11 million euros are still owed to the German record champions four years after the transfer.
In the summer of 2022, after eight extremely successful years in Munich, Lewandowski pushed for a move to Barcelona. In the end, the clubs agreed on a base transfer fee of around 45 million euros. However, the sum was not transferred in a single lump sum but was payable in several installments.
The fact that the transfer has not yet been fully settled financially is evident from FC Barcelona’s financial report for the 2025–26 season. As of the balance sheet date of June 30, 2026, Barça still reports a liability to FC Bayern of exactly 11.091 million euros.
Barcelona must pay Bayern shortly
Of particular interest is how the outstanding amount is classified on the balance sheet. The entire 11.091 million euros is classified as a current liability. This means the amount is due within the next twelve months.
Last year’s financial report had already shown that the Lewandowski deal had not yet been paid in full. As of June 30, 2025, 10.688 million euros still appeared on the books as a current liability owed to Bayern.
It is striking that the amount now reported—11.091 million euros—is actually slightly higher. However, it is not possible to clearly deduce from the published figures why the amount has increased compared to the previous year. Possible explanations include differences in how the transfer liabilities are accounted for under the contract or in the financial statements.
One thing is certain, however: Even four years after the spectacular transfer, FC Bayern is still waiting for a sum in the millions from Barcelona.
Lewandowski now plays in the MLS
The situation becomes particularly curious when considering Lewandowski’s own career. The former Bayern striker no longer plays for the Catalans at all.
After four years with FC Barcelona, the Polish player left the club in the summer of 2026 and joined the Chicago Fire in MLS. As early as May, Barça had officially confirmed that his time with the club would end after the 2025–26 season. In total, Lewandowski scored 119 goals in 191 competitive matches for the Catalans.
On the field, the forward has long since begun a new chapter. Financially, however, his 2022 transfer continues to have an impact.
Moreover, Bayern is not the only club or sports organization to which Barcelona still owes money. According to the financial report, current liabilities to sports organizations totaled 115.843 million euros as of June 30, 2026. Added to this were long-term liabilities totaling 51.555 million euros.
