Harry Kane’s contract extension with FC Bayern has been considered likely for quite some time. Both sides have repeatedly emphasized publicly how comfortable they feel with each other. Nevertheless, a new contract has yet to be signed. It is now becoming increasingly clear how the 33-year-old plans to spend the final years of his career—and what role the record champions are expected to play in that.
Kane’s current contract runs through 2027. The fact that no extension has been announced yet apparently isn’t causing any concern among Bayern’s executives. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen made it clear on Sunday on “Doppelpass” that there is simply no time pressure.
“If you’re not in a rush, you just do it a week later. And we didn’t do it in the summer because he (Kane; ed.) wanted to focus on the World Cup,” Dreesen explained.
However, the details of the new contract have not yet been fully finalized. When asked, for example, whether the contract term was still under negotiation, Dreesen replied: “That’s one of the minor details I’m not discussing here.”
This point is particularly relevant given Kane’s age. The striker is now 33 years old. Even though he’s currently playing at an outstanding level, Munich must consider how his performance will develop in the coming years when negotiating a long-term contract.
Kane wants to determine the right time for himself
According to information from SPORT1, however, sources close to the Englishman suggest that Kane himself would recognize in good time if he could no longer meet Bayern Munich’s high athletic demands.
For club officials, this could make the question of the exact contract duration a bit less pressing. Kane does not seem intent on continuing his career in Munich for as long as possible, regardless of his athletic ability.
Stefan Effenberg, too, would have no qualms about offering the striker a long-term contract. “Age shouldn’t be a factor when you have that kind of quality,” the SPORT1 expert explained.
Dreesen had also recently hinted that Kane plans to play professional soccer for several more years anyway. In doing so, the Bayern boss explicitly included the striker’s family in his remarks.
“Both Harry and his father and brother are actually planning for more than three years. So, they’re looking at a longer career,” said Dreesen.
Kane himself had also made it clear after the Bundesliga match against Stuttgart that he does not necessarily view his next contract as the last of his career. Talks with Bayern are ongoing and are set to continue in the coming weeks.
After Bayern, the MLS could be a tempting option
At the same time, it’s already becoming clear how Kane’s career might unfold after his time in Munich. According to information from SPORT1, a contract extension with FC Bayern is firmly part of his long-term plans.
After that, the Englishman might be drawn more to the North American MLS than to Saudi Arabia. While a concrete move is not currently on the table, the U.S. is said to align well with Kane’s aspirations in the long run.
The 33-year-old is considered a big fan of Florida and the nearby Bahamas, where he has been spending his vacations for many years. A move to the U.S. later in his career would therefore be entirely conceivable.
For Bayern, however, the most important thing for now is that Munich remains a central part of Kane’s plan. The striker apparently wants to continue competing for the biggest titles at the highest European level for several more years.
While the key details of the new contract still need to be worked out, the club and the player fundamentally continue to share the same goal. There are many indications that Kane wants to continue his success story at FC Bayern for now—before the final major phase of his career possibly takes him across the Atlantic.
