FC Bayern could not manage more than a 0–0 draw at Schalke. One of the biggest points of criticism was the team’s failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities—and Luis Diaz, in particular, came under fire from Bayern fans after the match. The Colombian squandered two major scoring chances and was punished with a grade of 5.
Just before halftime, Diaz had a chance to put his team ahead. After a strong pass from Nathaniel Brown, the winger found himself one-on-one with Loris Karius but failed to connect properly with the ball. After the break, he had another big chance: Following a through ball from Alphonso Davies, Díaz was once again through on goal, but his chip was too imprecise.
In the individual player ratings, the verdict was correspondingly clear. Many poor decisions and the missed chances ultimately led to a grade of 5. The 29-year-old also received the lowest rating in the community vote by Bayern fans.
The criticism wasn’t limited to the rating, however. Some fans also vented their frustration on social media. One user wrote on X: “Diaz was abysmally bad.” Another commented: “Diaz isn’t marketable in front of the goal.”
Already five missed golden opportunities
The forward’s inability to convert chances was already an issue in the season opener against Stuttgart. Diaz has squandered a total of five big chances in the first two games. At the same time, according to Sofascore, he has an expected goals (xG) total of 2.49, from which he has scored only one goal.
While the missed chances went unpunished in the 5-1 victory over VfB, the profligacy came back to haunt the team against Schalke, resulting in a scoreless 0-0 draw.
Bayern had significantly more possession and created numerous scoring chances, but failed to score against the deep-lying hosts for the first time since July 2025.
As for Diaz: His dynamism and offensive qualities are important for Bayern—but the Colombian needs to become significantly more efficient in front of the goal. After just two Bundesliga games, the criticism is no reason to panic. However, the statistics show where the winger still has room for improvement.
