Edin Dzeko has had an outstanding career as a professional soccer player. He has played for clubs including VfL Wolfsburg, Manchester City, and Inter, currently plays for FC Schalke 04, and scored two goals in his very first competitive match in the DFB Cup. It has now come to light that Bastian Schweinsteiger once wanted to bring him to FC Bayern.
Schweinsteiger served as a commentator during the ARD broadcast of the DFB Cup match between Halleschen FC and Schalke 04. And these days, it’s hard to ignore Edin Dzeko whenever the Royal Blues take the field.
Schweinsteiger raved about how the Bosnian is still performing at a high level. And he revealed some details from the past.
Schweinsteiger lured Dzeko to Bayern
“I actually tried to bring Edin Dzeko to Munich once, when he was with Wolfsburg. But unfortunately, it didn’t work out,” Schweinsteiger revealed. Dzeko played for the Lower Saxony club from 2007 to 2011 and won the German championship once with Wolfsburg.
Even back then, Dzeko was considered one of Europe’s best strikers. Wolfsburg discovered him at Teplice and paid around four million euros for the forward—an investment that more than paid off. Dzeko had 85 goals and 35 assists to his credit when he left Wolfsburg in 2011—all in just 145 games. In total, he scored 389 goals for all the clubs he played for during his career, with most coming for Roma.
Miron Muslic, Schalke’s current coach, was also asked about the Dzeko story after the game. “I know, I know—I’m familiar with the story,” the coach explained with a smile.
Even though things never really heated up between Dzeko and FC Bayern, the Bosnian has had an absolutely impressive career. And Bayern certainly can’t complain when it comes to the strikers who have worn the record champion’s jersey in recent years.
