Leon Goretzka is set to leave FC Bayern in the summer – but the 31-year-old delivered again in Bremen. The midfielder scored his second Bundesliga goal of the current season in Munich’s commanding 3-0 away win at Werder , setting an exclamation mark
Goretzka has now received prominent praise for his performance, with record international Lothar Matthäus raving about the Bayern professional on Sky: „Leon has always given everything for the team. He is very popular in the team, is well received and that is important. You can see that the team harmonises well overall.“
The game at the Weser Stadium was Goretzka’s 30th competitive match of the current season, 19 of which he has played in the Bundesliga. Despite the early decision not to extend his contract, which expires in the summer, the midfielder presented himself professionally
Matthäus recalled that Goretzka has also gone through difficult phases in recent months: „Leon had a difficult time, was already written off. Nevertheless, he fought his way through and became an international again. I assume that he will be going to the World Cup.“
Matthäus raves about Bayern star Goretzka
The former world footballer sees not only sporting quality in the Bayern star, but above all strength of character. He is particularly impressed by the midfielder’s attitude: „If you have an important role as a German player at FC Bayern – perhaps not the most important one like Harry Kane or Joshua Kimmich, but you play regularly, then you can also help the national team. And you can see that at Bayern. He puts himself at the back, is positive in training, gives everything and makes no demands. That will also go down well with Julian Nagelsmann.“

Goretzka is currently playing his eighth season with the German record champions, during which time he has won numerous titles and at times developed into a defining figure in Munich’s midfield. Even though he will retire in the summer, the 67-time international seems determined to say goodbye with strong performances
With the upcoming World Cup in mind, the current form curve should provide additional arguments. If Goretzka maintains his level, the special praise from Matthäus could indeed prove to be a harbinger of another major tournament in a DFB shirt.
