Mathys Tel wanted to take the next step in his career in England, but after a difficult six months at Tottenham, the Frenchman is now changing his mind and wants to draw the consequences.
According to the BBC, Tel is actively looking for a new sporting challenge in order to get more playing time. Despite 14 Premier League appearances, the attacker was rarely given the nod for the starting eleven at Spurs and only played a total of 473 minutes.
Particularly bitter: he was initially not even considered for the Champions League squad and only moved up due to Dominic Solanke’s injury. Tel has also only played a minor role in the cup competitions so far.
Is Tel moving to Italy?

According to the report, Tel is aiming for a loan deal this winter. As the BBC further reports, the Frenchman hopes to be able to jump on the World Cup bandwagon by playing regularly for a new club. In his current role as a substitute, he sees little opportunity to do so. A short-term change of scenery is seen as the only option to attract the attention of national coach Didier Deschamps once again.
It is currently unclear where Tel will line up in the second half of the season, with the BBC not naming any specific interested parties. In December, AS Roma were rumoured to be a possible buyer, with Il Messaggero reporting that the Italian club was keeping an eye on the striker at the time. However, the rumours have since gone quiet.
The 20-year-old only moved permanently from Bayern Munich to Tottenham in the summer of 2025. After a good start to his career in Munich as a top scorer, his performance stagnated and the decision was made to part ways. The Londoners paid over €30 million for the forward – an investment that has hardly paid off so far.
