Despite his contract extension, Dayot Upamecano ’s future at FC Bayern continues to spark debate. This is due to reports of an alleged release clause worth 65 million euros that could take effect next summer. Now, sporting director Max Eberl has commented on the speculation for the first time. However, the 53-year-old did not provide a clear answer to the crucial question.
Upamecano has signed a long-term contract extension with the German record champions. At first, this seemed to settle the future of the French international. Recently, however, rumors have surfaced suggesting that the center back could leave Munich as early as the summer of 2027 for a fixed transfer fee.
Paris Saint-Germain, in particular, is said to be closely monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation. The top French club has been linked to a potential transfer. If the rumored clause does indeed exist, Upamecano could once again become an attractive prospect on the transfer market despite his contract extension.
Eberl remains silent on the alleged release clause
After the game in Mainz, Eberl was specifically asked about the rumors surrounding the alleged 65-million-euro clause. However, the Bayern boss declined to comment on the contractual details. “I’m not here to discuss the details of the contract. One thing is clear: We’ve extended Upamecano’s contract and are absolutely delighted that we were able to do so. To be honest, he feels extremely at home here,” Eberl explained.
The sporting director thus left open whether the reports about a possible buyout clause are true. There was neither an explicit denial nor a confirmation.
Instead, Eberl emphasized Munich’s satisfaction with the French international’s long-term commitment.
These statements indicate that Bayern currently sees no reason to publicly discuss a possible departure of their defensive leader.
PSG is reportedly still targeting Upamecano

Nevertheless, rumors surrounding Upamecano could pick up steam again in the coming months.
As recently reported, Paris Saint-Germain is interested in the center back. The French champions are said to be closely monitoring the Bayern star’s contract situation.
A fixed buyout clause of 65 million euros would be a decisive factor in this regard. It could allow an interested club to sign the player without protracted negotiations with Bayern Munich, provided the other conditions are met.
However, it remains unconfirmed whether such a clause is actually part of the new contract.
For Munich, Upamecano’s potential departure would be a major loss on the field. Under Vincent Kompany, the Frenchman has become a central pillar of the defense. His speed, strength in one-on-one situations, and ability to build play make him a key component of the Bayern coach’s system.
Consequently, there was great relief at Säbener Straße when the contract extension was finalized.
