On August 1, 2011, one of the most successful goalkeeping stories of all time began. Manuel Neuer made his debut for FC Bayern 15 years ago—and his stats still speak for themselves today.
Hardly any other transfer has had such a lasting impact on the history of FC Bayern Munich in a single position as the signing of Manuel Neuer. Exactly 15 years ago, Neuer took his place between the posts for the record champions for the first time. Since then, he has not only become a club legend but has also revolutionized the role of the modern goalkeeper.
Neuer made his debut for Bayern on August 1, 2011. After his move from FC Schalke 04, the transfer wasn’t initially well-received by everyone, but the Gelsenkirchen native quickly won over the critics. With outstanding saves, his extraordinary playing style, and his role as a “playing goalkeeper,” he set new standards.
Impressive Record
Fifteen years later, his record is impressive: To date, Neuer has played a total of 598 competitive matches for FC Bayern.
In more than half of those matches, the goalkeeper kept a clean sheet: he finished with a clean sheet 269 times. These numbers impressively underscore the extent of Neuer’s contribution to the club’s successes.
Even more impressive is his trophy collection. Together with FC Bayern, Neuer has won 32 titles to date. These include numerous league championships, cup victories, and international successes. The 2019–20 season remains particularly unforgettable, as Bayern—with Neuer as captain—won the historic treble of the Champions League, the Bundesliga, and the DFB-Pokal.
Neuer had already won the treble with FC Bayern in the 2012–13 season. In both Champions League finals, he delivered outstanding performances and secured the victory.
An era between the posts
Neuer defined an entire era at FC Bayern. For many years, he was not only the team’s backbone but also one of its most important leaders.
His presence on the field and his communication with the defense made him a key factor in Munich’s style of play.
Even after serious injuries and setbacks, the now 40-year-old fought his way back time and again. His return following a severe leg fracture in 2022, in particular, was considered an extraordinary achievement and once again demonstrated his tremendous ambition.
The future remains uncertain
Following the contract extension through the summer of 2027, it’s clear that Neuer will be back between the posts next season. What happens after that, however, remains unclear. There are many indications, though, that the goalkeeper might retire at that point.
“I don’t play games thinking, ‘This is my last game’—regardless of whether I might be playing at a particular stadium for the last time. But it certainly looks like I’ll be retiring,” Neuer explained recently.
