The discussion surrounding Manuel Neuer and a possible return to the DFB goal at the World Cup continues to gather pace. Former national team keeper Jens Lehmann has now also made a clear statement on the situation – and clearly criticized national team coach Julian Nagelsmann in the process
Manuel Neuer had actually ended his career in the German national team after the 2024 European Championship at home. For many months, the issue was considered closed. However, there are now increasing indications that the 40-year-old could return to the DFB team after all
Several media outlets have recently reported unanimously that Neuer is not only set to be part of the World Cup squad, but is even being considered as Germany’s number one
For Jens Lehmann, however, such a decision would be problematic. In an interview with BILD, the former national goalkeeper made it clear: „Julian Nagelsmann had recently openly spoken out in favour of Oliver Baumann as number one. If it is indeed true that Manuel Neuer would now be in the World Cup goal, that would be a breach of trust.“
Lehmann believes that this would not only affect Baumann himself, but the entire team. „Other players would also be thinking: Can I believe the statements made by the national coach?“ the former Arsenal and BVB keeper continued
„Players need clarity“
Lehmann is particularly critical of the communication surrounding the goalkeeping issue. Although competition is a natural part of professional soccer, every player needs reliability. „He has to be able to withstand competition and that’s part of it. But he needs clarity – like every other player. I have to be able to rely on the coach,“ Lehmann emphasised
Julian Nagelsmann himself also caused additional discussion recently. The national coach was a guest in the ZDF sports studio on Saturday evening, but avoided making a clear statement on the goalkeeper issue
Nagelsmann repeatedly stated that he wanted to speak to the players concerned personally before communicating any decisions publicly. Between the lines, however, the 38-year-old let it be known that the discussion about Neuer was indeed taking place internally
Lehmann is not alone in his assessment: Oliver Kahn had also previously expressed his criticism of the current developments. „If Julian is now suddenly thinking about quickly replacing the goalkeeper, then that is of course quite adventurous,“ explained the Bayern legend recently
There will be final clarity on Thursday at the latest, when Julian Nagelsmann officially announces his DFB squad for the 2026 World Cup.
