FC Bayern have conceded a conspicuous number of goals recently. Ahead of the PSG second leg, Vincent Kompany talks about the situation and makes it clear what he now expects from his team.
After the wild 3:3 draw against 1. FC Heidenheim, the focus has once again shifted to FC Bayern’s defence. In the last three competitive matches, Munich have conceded a total of eleven goals: three in the 4:3 in Mainz, five in the 4:5 in Paris and three more against Heidenheim.
At the press conference after the Heidenheim game, the Bayern coach was asked whether he was worried about the number of goals conceded. Kompany calmly assessed the situation: „I was a defender and know how it feels when you perhaps concede too many goals in a week. But I already said this last year: the boys deserve to remain stable and calm in this whole discussion. Back then, we opened up the topic and then, I think, played eight times in a row to nil.“
For the Belgian, the debate about individual mistakes is less important than the response on the pitch. „So the reaction is something we can always show. Now we have to show it again. I don’t want to throw everything together either. The game in Paris was the game in Paris. Against Mainz and Heidenheim, we obviously conceded too many goals. At the same time, we tried to make sensible decisions so that we can fully attack again against Paris.“
Kompany calls for reaction against PSG
Immediately after the draw against Heidenheim, Kompany quickly turned his attention to the Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. „Now we can focus on Wednesday,“ said the Bayern coach after the game. Despite the defensive problems, he also highlighted his team’s morale: „Everything went well for Heidenheim in the first half, but not for us. I understand that not everything can always be perfect, but the way we kept coming back is not to be taken for granted.“
Another important point for Kompany was the personnel situation after the intense match. „Now this game is over, everyone is fit. That’s what we wanted,“ explained the 40-year-old. Alphonso Davies came on against Heidenheim in the final phase, Tom Bischof was back in the squad but did not play any minutes.
Looking ahead to Wednesday’s clash at the Allianz Arena, Kompany made his expectations clear: „I don’t want to lump everything together. But one thing is clear: as a defender, as a goalkeeper and as a team, you have to show a reaction. And there’s no better time to do that than on Wednesday.“
