Harry Kane’s missed penalty in the 2-0 win against Union Saint-Gilloise was quickly put to bed for Vincent Kompany. The FC Bayern Munich coach assessed the scene soberly after the Champions League match and reacted with composure.
The starting point was a reference by the DAZN presenter to the fact that Kane had missed a penalty for the first time since August 2025. Kompany took it with a wink: „You can say that. Perhaps even more positively: it’s over now, he missed and we won.“ For the Bayern coach, the focus was less on the penalty than on the result and the overall impression of the game.
The fact that Kane failed to score from the spot was unusual for the Englishman, but had no impact whatsoever. The striker had already scored twice and decided the game anyway, including with a previously converted penalty. „That didn’t change his focus,“ emphasised Kompany with regard to the miss.
The coach was correspondingly relaxed when jokingly asked whether Kane would still be scheduled as a penalty taker in the future. „No… now he can build up his new list again, so no problem,“ said Kompany.
Kompany: „He has those skills…“

The Belgian also used the scene to talk about Kane’s fundamental importance in attacking play. The 32-year-old is far more than a classic enforcer, he said. „He has this ability, of course, not only to drop down, but also to play forward and shift the game,“ Kompany explained.
Depending on the opponent and structure, Kane is deliberately given freedom to introduce his passing game or get into goal-scoring positions himself. „The important thing for me is simply that we always have the goal at the end of the day. That remains the priority,“ the Bayern coach made clear.
The missed penalty therefore remained what it was from Kompany’s point of view: a side note in a successful Champions League evening.
