FC Bayern is kicking off the new Champions League season with one of the most valuable rosters in Europe. Vincent Kompany’s team currently has an estimated market value of 1.04 billion euros. That’s an impressive sum—but by international standards, it’s not quite enough to rank among the very best.
According to the latest market values from Transfermarkt, the German record champion ranks only sixth among Champions League participants. A total of seven clubs have surpassed the one-billion-euro mark.
Real Madrid stands unchallenged at the top. The squad of “Los Blancos” is valued at a total of 1.46 billion euros. This puts Real about 420 million euros ahead of Bayern.
Manchester City follows closely behind at 1.43 billion euros. Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain total 1.36 billion euros, while Arsenal FC stands at 1.33 billion euros. FC Barcelona, too, remains well ahead of the Munich team with an estimated squad market value of 1.26 billion euros.
Bayern is just ahead of Liverpool
The race is much tighter behind FC Bayern. Liverpool FC has a market value of 1.03 billion euros, putting them just around ten million euros behind the record champions.
Manchester United follows with 924.3 million euros, already some distance behind. Inter Milan is valued at 730.3 million euros, and Atlético Madrid rounds out the top ten with 679.7 million euros.
Noteworthy from a German perspective: Bayern is the only Bundesliga club to make it into the top ten most valuable teams in this year’s Champions League.
At the same time, the ranking shows the financial and competitive challenges the Munich team will face on its path to the coveted Champions League trophy. No fewer than five teams have an even more valuable roster, at least based on estimated market values.
For Bayern, however, this doesn’t necessarily have to be a disadvantage. Harry Kane recently emphasized that in the Champions League, the best individual team doesn’t necessarily win, and that other factors also play a role in decisive moments.
18.6 billion euros in the Champions League
The scale of the Champions League becomes even clearer when you look at all the participants. According to an analysis by UOL, the squads of the 36 Champions League clubs have a combined estimated market value of an incredible 18.6 billion euros.
However, there is a world of difference between the individual participants. While Real Madrid’s squad alone is valued at 1.46 billion euros, Azerbaijani debutant Sabah sits at the other end of the rankings.
Its squad is valued at a mere 18.5 million euros. The entire Sabah squad is thus worth less than numerous individual players at top European clubs.
FC Bayern also has several players whose individual market values significantly exceed the total squad value of the Champions League debutant.
In the end, however, these billion-euro valuations won’t determine who gets to lift the Champions League trophy on June 5, 2027. Despite ranking sixth in market value, Bayern Munich remains among the title contenders on the field.
The numbers, however, make it clear just how fierce the competition is: With Real Madrid, Manchester City, PSG, Arsenal, and Barcelona, five teams are entering the new Champions League season with nominally more valuable squads.
