FC Bayern could be eyeing a spectacular transfer this coming summer. According to reports from Spain, the Munich club is once again looking at Gavi of FC Barcelona. The 22-year-old midfielder is said to be particularly highly regarded by coach Vincent Kompany. However, there are several hurdles to a potential move.
As Spanish transfer journalist Juan Jesus reports, Gavi is among the German record champions’ top transfer targets. Kompany, in particular, is said to think highly of the Spanish national team player and would love to have him on his team.
A move in the winter transfer window is therefore not on the table. Instead, Bayern is monitoring the midfielder’s situation with an eye toward the summer of 2027. Should an opportunity arise at FC Barcelona, the Munich club apparently wants to be ready.
Kompany is said to be a big fan of Gavi
According to information from Juan Jesus, Gavi is high on the Bayern coach’s priority list. The Belgian is said to particularly value the Spaniard’s playing qualities and mentality.
Gavi is regarded as a technically skilled and hard-working midfielder who can play both in central midfield and in more attacking positions.
However, a potential signing is likely to be anything but easy. According to the report, FC Barcelona currently has no interest in letting go of its homegrown talent. Gavi himself is also reportedly not seeking a transfer at this time.
Bayern are therefore apparently hoping that the situation will change as the season progresses.
Under coach Hansi Flick, the 22-year-old is not currently a guaranteed starter. Although Gavi has already played 174 competitive matches for the first team, he regularly faces stiff competition for playing time with the Catalans.
Even during Spain’s World Cup triumph last summer, the 32-time national team player played only a supporting role.
If his playing situation in Barcelona does not improve, this could potentially open up new opportunities.
Bayern had previously shown interest in Gavi
Munich’s interest in Gavi is by no means new. As early as 2023 and 2024, the Spanish international was linked multiple times to the German record champions. At the time, however, the rumors never progressed beyond the early stages.
Now, with an eye toward the upcoming season, the topic could regain significance.
A transfer would certainly be noteworthy; after all, Bayern already has a strong lineup in central midfield with Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and Tom Bischof.
With Gavi, the Munich club would be signing another highly talented player who, despite his young age, has plenty of experience at the highest level.
There have been repeated transfers between FC Bayern and FC Barcelona in recent years. Particularly notable was the loan of Philippe Coutinho in the summer of 2019. The Brazilian went on to win the treble with the Munich club the following season.
In 2022, Bayern also signed young talent Adam Aznou from Barcelona’s youth academy. That same summer, Robert Lewandowski moved in the opposite direction to Catalonia.
It remains to be seen whether Gavi will indeed be the next player to make the move from Barcelona to Munich.
At present, this is merely a transfer rumor from Spain. However, should the midfielder’s situation with the Catalans change, FC Bayern could make another move next summer.
