Lennart Karl provided the perfect response to recent criticism during FC Bayern’s 2-0 away win against Atlético Madrid. After a difficult few weeks and discussions about his performance and public image, the 18-year-old made a comeback with a crucial goal. Following the match, the Bayern prospect received prominent support from teammate Konrad Laimer.
In recent weeks, Karl had increasingly come under scrutiny. While the attacking player had regularly generated excitement during his rapid rise last season, he had more often than not fallen short of high expectations lately. His behavior off the field was also viewed critically within the club.
Uli Hoeneß, in particular, had recently caused a stir. Bayern’s honorary president announced that he wanted to have a “serious talk” with Karl. Sporting director Max Eberl also commented on the youngster’s development. Club officials made it clear that they want to see more consistency from the talented attacker again.
Laimer defends Karl: “That’s all part of it”
In the Champions League match against Atlético Madrid, Karl started the game despite the recent discussions. Due to the tight roster situation, the youngster made the starting lineup and, together with Alphonso Davies and Michael Olise, provided offensive support for Harry Kane.
At first, Karl struggled against the Spaniards’ well-organized defense. As the game progressed, however, the 18-year-old found his rhythm and was rewarded in the 54th minute with the crucial opening goal.
After the final whistle, Konrad Laimer—who had himself been named Man of the Match—was asked about his young teammate and the recent criticism. “That’s just part of the game. I’m happy for the kid. He stays calm; he works hard,” explained the Austrian.
Laimer particularly highlighted the forward’s determination. “That was a real hard-earned goal today because he dug in and fought his way through,” emphasized the 29-year-old.
“He has a great career ahead of him.”

Despite the important goal, Laimer still sees room for improvement in Karl. The Bayern star made it clear, however, that he thinks highly of the 18-year-old. “Of course, he still has a lot to learn, but I think he has a great career ahead of him,” Laimer explained.
For Karl, the support of his experienced teammate is likely to be particularly valuable. After all, in recent weeks the youngster has had to deal not only with his on-field form but also with public discussions about his behavior.
The fact that the criticism clearly weighs on him was also evident in his goal celebration in Madrid. After scoring the opening goal, Karl made a striking gesture with his hands, which was interpreted as a response to the recent discussions.
On the field, at any rate, his goal was the perfect response. With the 1-0 goal, Karl put Bayern on the path to victory, before Laimer sealed the 2-0 final score in the second half.
For the talented forward, his performance in Madrid could mark an important turning point. After his first minor slump in form, Karl has shown that he can make a decisive impact even under difficult circumstances.
Laimer, in any case, is convinced that the youngster’s development is far from over. For the Austrian, the recent discussions are simply part of the maturing process for a young professional.
