FC Bayern made a real statement in the Champions League with their 2-0 away win at Atlético Madrid. Sporting Director Max Eberl was thrilled after the match and had strong words of praise for the Munich team’s performance.
Despite the difficult past few weeks and numerous personnel setbacks, Bayern put on an impressive display in Madrid. In their 2-0 victory over Atlético, the German record champions impressed not only with their play but, above all, with their extraordinary intensity and commitment.
Sporting director Max Eberl was absolutely raving after the final whistle. In the mixed zone, the 53-year-old repeatedly described the team’s performance as world-class. He was particularly impressed by the way the Munich side controlled the game from the very start.
“It was simply a world-class performance by a team that, from the very first minute, tried to apply pressure here at the Atlético Stadium and be dominant,” Eberl explained.
“An incredible display”
The sporting director was particularly impressed by Munich’s aggressive pressing. Against the Spaniards, who are known for being tough opponents, his team delivered an outstanding performance both with and without the ball.
“In both phases—with and without the ball—we tried to be bold, play soccer, and found solutions time and again,” Eberl emphasized.
His praise for the defensive work was even more emphatic: “Without the ball, we shut down the opponent in an unbelievable way—you can’t say ‘killed,’ but we pressed them down, didn’t give them a chance, didn’t give them any breathing room.”
For Eberl, consistency was the key factor. Bayern maintained their intensity practically throughout the entire match and barely allowed Atlético to get into their rhythm.
“Rocky mentality”: Eberl is proud of his Bayern team
In addition to the team’s on-field performance, Eberl particularly highlighted the team’s character. Given the numerous setbacks of recent weeks, the performance in Madrid was anything but a given. “It’s extraordinary, and all Bayern fans can be extremely proud of this team,” explained the sporting director.
Even before the match, Eberl had described the Munich team’s resilience using a specific phrase. He revisited this point after the victory: “I described it yesterday as a ‘Rocky mentality.’”
For Eberl, this mentality epitomizes FC Bayern: accepting setbacks, staying strong despite them, and never losing sight of their own standards.
For the Bayern boss, the success in Madrid is therefore far more than just another Champions League victory. It is proof that the team is capable of competing at the highest European level even under difficult conditions.
