FC Bayern’s planning for the summer is in full swing – and a prominent name is once again coming into focus. In John Stones, the Munich club could sign an experienced defensive solution – and on a free transfer
While the record champions are concentrating on the possible treble in sporting terms, those responsible are already working on the squad for the coming season in the background. There could be changes in the defense in particular
Two central defenders, Minjae Kim and Hiroki Ito, are being considered as possible candidates for sale. Bayern apparently have a clear plan B in this case – and it leads to Manchester
As the portal Caught Offside reports, John Stones is still on Munich’s wish list. The 31-year-old could move on a free transfer in the summer and would therefore be an extremely interesting option
At first glance, the potential deal has many advantages: Stones has enormous international experience, has won every major title with Manchester City and is regarded as a strong central defender who fits perfectly into modern systems
His ability to build the game out of defence in particular would fit in well with Vincent Kompany’s style, and he could also take on an important role as an experienced backup player
Injuries as a major risk

But this is exactly where the problem lies. In the past two years, Stones has been repeatedly injured and has missed numerous games. In some cases, the Englishman has been out for weeks or even months
This susceptibility to injury makes the transfer a risk – despite the lack of a transfer fee, as even a free agent incurs high salary costs
Memories of Dier come to mind
A similar scenario already existed at FC Bayern with Eric Dier. The Englishman arrived at the beginning of 2024 for comparatively little money and developed into a reliable backup in defense
A model that could also work for Stones. The idea: experience, quality and leadership – without having to invest a large transfer fee
Balancing opportunity and risk
However, Bayern are not alone in the race: Juventus Turin, AC Milan and Everton FC are also said to be looking at signing him
The market for top players on a free transfer is highly competitive – especially when it comes to a name like John Stones
This poses a classic transfer question for FC Bayern: Is it worth the risk with an injury-prone player – or does the chance of getting an experienced top defender for free outweigh the risk?
The decision will probably also depend on how the Kim and Ito situations develop, but one thing is clear: Munich are examining all options – and a free transfer deal for Stones remains an exciting possibility.
