FC Bayern are working flat out on their squad planning for the coming season – but an internal conflict is looming in the case of Anthony Gordon
According to media reports, the England international from Newcastle United is seen as the ideal solution for the attacking flank. While coach Vincent Kompany and the sporting management are pushing ahead with the transfer, the supervisory board is opposing it
Supervisory board draws clear line on mega transfers
Newcastle are reportedly demanding around 90 million euros for the 25-year-old – a sum that is currently meeting with resistance at Säbener Straße. According to information from SPORT1, the supervisory board is not prepared to approve such a high transfer fee, suggesting a scenario that has already led to discussions at the German record champions
It was only last summer that a potential transfer of Xavi Simons failed internally. At the time, Max Eberl, Christoph Freund and Kompany had clearly spoken out in favour of signing him. However, club patron Uli Hoeneß vetoed the move – the transfer fee demanded was too high in the eyes of the club’s management. Simons then moved from RB Leipzig to Tottenham Hotspur for around 70 million euros
Kompany pushes – but the structure puts the brakes on
There is a similar tension in the case of Gordon. Kompany is a big supporter of the transfer, as the flexible attacking player would fit perfectly into the Belgian’s dynamic system. Gordon brings pace, one-on-one strength and goal threat – attributes that are in demand in the current Bayern squad
However, the club’s strategic direction currently speaks against such a deal. Munich are not planning any major spending in the summer, but want to strengthen selectively and selectively. In addition, there is the clear requirement to first generate transfer revenue before making new investments
The situation is therefore clear: while the sporting management and coaching staff are pushing for a top transfer, the club management is focusing on financial discipline. Whether both sides can agree on a compromise remains to be seen
What is clear, however, is that if Newcastle stick to their transfer fee demands, Gordon’s move to Munich is likely to be difficult to realize. And at Säbener Straße, it could once again become clear that there is not only a fight for every inch on the pitch – but also in the club’s decision-making rooms.
