After two alarming incidents, Jamal Musiala has publicly revealed the cause of his collapses. The Bayern star has been diagnosed with so-called absences. But what’s behind them?
Within just a few days, the alarming scenes involving Jamal Musiala have repeated themselves. After the 23-year-old had already collapsed on the field during the Telekom Cup match against RB Leipzig, a similar incident occurred during FC Bayern’s 4-2 preseason win over 1. FC Heidenheim.
Musiala had come on as a substitute in the second half but had to leave the field again just a few minutes later. After he went down in midfield, Jonathan Tah and Harry Kane, among others, rushed to their teammate’s side. The medical staff were also quickly on the scene.
After brief treatment, Musiala was able to get back on his feet and leave the field. Shortly afterward, the national team player spoke out himself and explained the medical details in detail for the first time.
“First things first—I’m fine,” Musiala wrote on Instagram. The attacking player then explained: “I understand that many of you are worried. Today, I want to put your minds at ease and explain something to you: I’ve been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absences that are due to a neurological dysfunction.”
What are absences?
An absence is a brief disturbance of consciousness. During such an episode, those affected are barely aware of their surroundings—or not at all—and often do not respond when spoken to. In many cases, this state lasts only a few seconds.
Afterward, those affected are usually responsive again. They often cannot remember the actual lapse itself. As a result, these outwardly noticeable moments can occur very suddenly.
This is exactly what Musiala addressed in his statement: “These can happen right at the end of a game, like against Leipzig or even now in Heidenheim. I know that at first glance, they seem scary—but for me, they’re currently part of my everyday life. I’m receiving the best medical care for this and am very optimistic.”
In addition, the Bayern star expressly emphasized that there is “no further health risk.”

Absences are generally considered to be medically treatable. Antiepileptic drugs can be used in therapy to stabilize electrical activity in the brain and prevent further seizures. In addition, factors such as lack of sleep, severe stress, or dehydration can play a role and should be avoided whenever possible.
With successful medication management, a largely normal daily life is possible. Athletic activities are also generally still possible. Regular neurological examinations and individually tailored exercise management are crucial in this regard.
Treatment, however, may extend over a longer period of time. Usually, it is only after a prolonged period without further seizures that doctors assess whether medication can be gradually reduced.
It remains to be seen what specific impact Musiala’s diagnosis will have on his appearances for FC Bayern. The 23-year-old has made it clear, however, that he is undergoing medical treatment and is taking an optimistic approach to the situation.
