Transfer fees are reaching ever-higher levels on the transfer market. Max Eberl now makes it clear: FC Bayern could also make a major investment in one player.
The international transfer market has once again reached enormous proportions this summer. Enzo Fernández moved from Chelsea FC to Manchester City for 145 million euros, while Bradley Barcola cost Liverpool FC 125 million euros when he transferred from Paris Saint-Germain.
These are figures that FC Bayern is also keeping a close eye on. But could the German record champions themselves pull off another transfer exceeding the 100-million-euro mark? Sporting director Max Eberl has now given a clear answer to that question.
“Bayern Munich is strong; the club demonstrated that with the signing of Harry Kane. If we want to and are convinced it’s the right move, Bayern Munich is capable of making major transfers,” Eberl explained in an interview with Sport BILD.
At the same time, however, the Bayern boss made it clear that the Munich club does not want to participate in the financial arms race among other top European clubs. Rather, he said, it is crucial that a costly transfer fits into the club’s long-term strategy: “But we want to approach this with foresight. Our strategy in recent years has been to sign players who enable us to win the Champions League, the German championship, and the DFB Cup. At the same time, we want to bring in young players from our academy who can grow with us.”
Eberl: Bayern Can Make Major Transfers
The example of Bradley Barcola shows that Bayern doesn’t go along with every price hike. In the same interview, Eberl confirmed that the Munich club had been looking into the French attacking star. However, given the sums being demanded for Barcola, Bayern pulled out. Liverpool ultimately paid 125 million euros to PSG.
Instead, the German record champions signed Luis Díaz. The Munich club also invested a lot of money in the Colombian, though significantly less than Liverpool paid for Barcola. Eberl therefore described the Díaz transfer as costly, but “on a different scale than Bradley’s.”
In principle, however, another transfer on the scale of Harry Kane—or even beyond—remains possible. The Englishman moved from Tottenham to FC Bayern in 2023 for a base transfer fee of around 100 million euros and remains the most expensive signing in the club’s history to this day.
Eberl’s statements show that Bayern apparently has no fixed financial ceiling. If the club’s leadership is convinced of a player’s merit and the transfer aligns with both the sporting and economic strategy, the record champions will continue to be able to reach for the top of the shelf in the future.
