FC Bayern could make soccer history this season. Both the men’s and women’s teams have a chance to set special championship records.
With the season about to begin, all eyes at FC Bayern are on the first titles. The women’s team has already set the tone with a 3-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg in the Super Cup. Vincent Kompany’s men’s team can follow suit on Saturday against Borussia Dortmund.
But for the Munich club, there’s much more at stake in the coming months. In addition to the DFB Cup and the Champions League, the league title is at the very top of the agenda. Another Bundesliga triumph could lead FC Bayern to a historic milestone.
President Herbert Hainer had already addressed this unique situation during the Audi Summer Tour. “We want to defend our league title and the cup. If we become champions, we will have won the German league 36 times and would thus be record-holders in the top five leagues, alongside Juventus Turin and Real Madrid,” the 72-year-old told the tz.
FC Bayern could thus provide further proof of its extraordinary domestic dominance. At the same time, the club has the opportunity to reach a historic milestone not only with its men’s team.
Bayern’s women’s team can also set a record
That’s because the FC Bayern women’s team is also heading into the new season with high ambitions. Following their commanding victory over Wolfsburg, the Munich women are once again considered one of the top favorites for the title.
Should the championship return to Munich, it would mark their fifth consecutive Bundesliga triumph and their ninth title overall. This would allow the Bayern women to set a new record as well.
Hainer sees this as an opportunity for an extraordinary scenario: “If the women’s team wins the championship, it would be their fifth in a row and ninth overall—which would also make us record-holders,” explained the Bayern president.
What Hainer finds particularly appealing is the combination of these two potential records. “I don’t think there’s a single club in the world where both the men’s and women’s teams are record holders—that would be one of a kind.”
(function(){
var iframe=document.getElementById(‚polls-fcbinside‘);
if(!iframe)return;
window.addEventListener(‚message‘,function(e){
if(e.source!==iframe.contentWindow)return;
var d=e.data||{};
if(d.type===’FOOTY_WIDGET_HEIGHT’&&typeof d.height===’number‘){iframe.style.height=d.height+’px‘;}
});
})();
This could mean a very special joint championship celebration for FC Bayern this spring. However, there’s still a long way to go until then. While the women have already underscored their ambitions with a decisive Super Cup victory, Kompany’s team won’t kick off the Bundesliga season until August 28 with a home game against VfB Stuttgart.
Both teams are also looking to make a fresh start on the international stage. Last season, the Bayern women’s team was eliminated from the Champions League by FC Barcelona, while the men’s team fell to Paris Saint-Germain.
Domestically, however, FC Bayern could make history twice this season. If both the men’s and women’s teams win the championship again, they would each set new historic milestones.
