With Nathaniel Brown, FC Bayern has signed a top-tier competitor for Alphonso Davies. The Canadian, however, isn’t letting that faze him—and knows the key to defending his starting spot.
When FC Bayern kicks off preseason training for the new season this coming Monday, the competition for the left-back position is likely to begin immediately. For the first time, Alphonso Davies and new signing Nathaniel Brown will face off as teammates on the training field.
According to the Münchner Abendzeitung, Brown enters the competition with a slight edge. The German national team player was one of Vincent Kompany’s top targets and impressed the club’s leadership not only with his performances but also with his versatility.
Brown himself explained after his move to Munich: “During my talks with the club officials, I quickly got a great feeling. Vincent Kompany, in particular, showed me how he sees me and my development, and he absolutely won me over.”
Davies Embraces the Competition
Sporting director Max Eberl has also already highlighted Brown’s qualities: “He made an impact at the World Cup and showed why we’ve been keeping an eye on him for quite some time. He’ll expand our options in defense and midfield.”
For Davies, the competition comes at a difficult time. The Canadian is looking back on a disappointing season and an unfortunate World Cup. Following his cruciate ligament tear in the spring of 2025, a torn muscle bundle recently set him back once again. At the World Cup, he made only a brief appearance and missed the round of 16 match against Morocco entirely due to recurring thigh problems.

According to information from the AZ, the left back has no intention of leaving FC Bayern despite Brown’s signing. Instead, he wants to face the competition head-on. Internally, his physical condition is considered the decisive factor. Davies knows that he must finally stay injury-free. If he can return to the top form he showed during the 2020 treble-winning season, he has an excellent chance of reclaiming his starting spot. Otherwise, Brown—Kompany’s preferred choice—is likely to have the edge.
