Nathaniel Brown continues to be heavily linked with FC Bayern, but record international Lothar Matthäus is questioning a possible move for the Frankfurt man
FC Bayern continue to work on their squad planning for the new season, with Nathaniel Brown still one of the players on their wish list. The German international from Eintracht Frankfurt is regarded as one of the most interesting full-backs in the country and has been linked with a move to Säbener Straße for weeks
However, not everyone is completely convinced of a possible transfer. Lothar Matthäus was cautious about the speculation when asked by FCBinside at a promotional event organized by collectible card manufacturer Topps
„A German international can always be good for FC Bayern. But Alphonso Davies only recently signed a huge contract at FC Bayern. I don’t know whether we need Davies and Brown at left-back. That would be two top contracts, Brown also costs a bit and Frankfurt won’t give him away for nothing,“ Matthäus explained
The 65-year-old is addressing a point that is also likely to play a role internally. In Davies, Bayern already have one of the best left-backs in Europe, whose contract has been extended on a long-term basis. The question is therefore whether an investment of around €60 million for another player in this position would actually be necessary
Matthäus calls for sales first
Regardless of the sporting assessment, Matthäus sees other issues at the record champions anyway. In his opinion, Munich must first generate income before further major transfers are possible
„I don’t think FC Bayern are under any pressure, they have a good squad, but will certainly strengthen it with two or three more players. They will also focus on youth again, but I also assume that one or two players will leave FC Bayern,“ Matthäus emphasised
In fact, Bayern are currently pursuing a similar approach. Progress is also being made on the sales side, with several players considered candidates for sale in order to create additional financial leeway
Meanwhile, the Brown poker continues. According to kicker, Eintracht Frankfurt are hoping for a quick agreement and are demanding around 60 million euros for the 22-year-old. Talks between the two clubs are said to be already underway.
