The battle for the additional Champions League place is coming to a dramatic head. Germany and Spain are neck-and-neck in the UEFA rankings – with a difference of just 0.567 points. Spain currently has 21.781 points, just ahead of the Bundesliga, which has 21.214 points
The calculation is complex but crucial: two points are awarded for every win, one for a draw, and these points are divided by the number of teams that have started
This is precisely where Germany has a small advantage: because the Bundesliga started with fewer teams, each success weighs more heavily. A win gives Germany 0.285 points, while Spain only 0.25. A draw is worth 0.142 to 0.125
Maximum yield: Bayern and Freiburg as the key
If FC Bayern and SC Freiburg win their semi-finals, reach the final and triumph there, they could collect up to 10.5 points between them, which would raise the German coefficient to 22.714
Spain could collect a maximum of 10 points with Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, which would result in a coefficient of 23.031. However, this scenario is not entirely realistic, as Bayern and Atlético would face each other directly in the Champions League final
A decisive threshold value: If Spain were to pick up 7.5 points, the Bundesliga would be out of reach
A possible example: Atlético win their semi-final (2 points), reach the final (1.5 bonus points), lose there – while Rayo win the Conference League title and collect a further 4.5 points. In this case, Spain would be uncatchable
Thousandths could decide
Particularly explosive: even if both German teams were to miss out on the semi-finals, the additional Champions League place is still possible
An extreme scenario shows just how close it can get: if Bayern and Freiburg win their second legs but are eliminated on penalties, they will collect a total of four points. The German coefficient would rise to 21.785 – just four thousandths more than Spain’s 21.781
A minimal difference that will ultimately decide millions
The race between Germany and Spain is completely open, and any win, any draw – or even any penalty shoot-out – could be the deciding factor
For the Bundesliga, one thing is clear: every point counts, and in the best-case scenario, it will not only take strong performances from Bayern and Freiburg, but also slip-ups from the Spanish competition
In the end, a difference of a few thousandths could actually decide whether Germany gets a fifth place in the Champions League – or goes home empty-handed.
