FC Bayern kicked off the new Bundesliga season with a resounding victory. After a closely contested start, Vincent Kompany’s team ultimately cruised to a 5-1 win over VfB Stuttgart. The Bayern coach expressed satisfaction after the game, though he didn’t shy away from acknowledging that his team had some initial struggles.
FC Bayern won its Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart 5–1. Vincent Kompany is well aware that the match wasn’t as one-sided throughout the entire 90 minutes as the final score suggests.
“The start of the game was very difficult,” Kompany explained after the final whistle. The Belgian was particularly focused on the visitors’ physical presence.
Stuttgart gave the record champions a hard time in the early going and repeatedly challenged Bayern with aggressive tackling. Kompany, however, was prepared for this style of play.
“We know that Stuttgart is a physically strong team with good attackers,” explained the Bayern coach. For him, therefore, his team’s reaction was the most crucial factor.
“We stayed calm, kept playing, and created more and more chances. In the end, it was a well-deserved victory,” Kompany summed up.
In fact, the Munich team improved significantly as the game went on. After an evenly matched opening phase, Bayern increasingly took control and sealed the deal with four goals after halftime.
„Everything starts from scratch again“
Despite the successful start, Kompany doesn’t want his players to rest on their laurels. Rather, the coach wants to build on past successes.
„We just want to keep going the way we have in recent years. We’ve shown a lot of energy and dedication,“ emphasized the 39-year-old.
At the same time, Kompany made it clear that every player must fight for his position again: “Everything starts from scratch again. I hope all the players are aware of that, but it’s also my job to make sure they understand it.”
Looking ahead to the coming months, the Bayern coach expressed optimism. Kompany is particularly confident about the mix within the roster.
„We have a good squad with a perfect mix of experience and youth,“ the Belgian explained. Kompany also has high hopes for the new signings: „The new signings will help us a lot.“
However, the Bayern coach sees his players’ fitness as a crucial prerequisite for a successful season: “We just need to enter the decisive phase of the season with all our players fit. We managed that quite well last season,” said Kompany.
With their 5-1 victory over Stuttgart, FC Bayern has made a strong first impression that Kompany and his team can build on in the coming weeks.
