In the opening game of the 2026–27 Bundesliga season, FC Bayern hosted VfB Stuttgart. At their home stadium, the Allianz Arena, the Munich team prevailed 5–1.
Following their convincing performance in the Super Cup, the record champions were looking to get off to a strong start in the new Bundesliga season. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany fielded a lineup similar to the one used against BVB. Only Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies were new additions to the starting lineup.
While Lennart Karl returned to the roster for the first time after an injury, Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala remained sidelined.
Upamecano heads in the opener
The opening minutes of the match were evenly matched. While FC Bayern sought to control the ball, Stuttgart tried to disrupt Bayern’s play with aggressive pressing.
The Swabians then created the first good chance. A deflected header by Prömel landed at the feet of Thiago Tomas, who shot the ball wide.
Shortly afterward, FC Bayern made their first mark on the game, also hitting the woodwork. Olise curled a direct free kick off the right post (17′).
Another four minutes later, another set piece gave Bayern the lead. Kimmich’s corner found Upamecano at the near post, who made only a slight but decisive touch and headed the ball in for a 1–0 lead.
After that, the record champions grew increasingly dominant and created more good chances. Kane found Diaz with a beautiful through ball, but the Colombian was denied by Stuttgart goalkeeper Bredlow (26′).
Shortly afterward, Olise tried a typical curling shot toward the far corner but missed by a hair (28′). In the 38th minute, Bredlow was once again on hand to defuse a dangerous shot from Brown.
Bredlow was once again on his toes to stop Laimer’s attempt in the 42nd minute, preventing the score from becoming 2–0. Shortly before the halftime whistle, Davies found Olise, who tried a backheel shot, but he, too, was denied by the strong Bredlow. Thus, despite numerous good chances for FC Bayern, the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
A Thrilling Second Half
The abundance of missed chances in the first half would come back to haunt them. In the 52nd minute, Neuer made a strong save against Chabot. The ball then deflected off Thiago Tomas and Pavlovic’s back before landing at Vagnomann’s feet, and he coolly finished to make it 1–1.
Just three minutes later, however, Michael Olise restored Bayern’s lead. After a beautiful pass from Kimmich, the Frenchman kept his cool in front of Bredlow and slotted the ball low into the net to make it 2-1 (55′).
Just two minutes after that, Vagnomann found the back of the net again—this time, however, in his own goal. After a cross from Davies, the VfB defender slipped unluckily, deflected the ball into his own net, and gave FC Bayern a 3-1 lead.
In the 63rd minute, Olise scored a second time, but his goal was disallowed due to a razor-thin offside call, and the score remained 3–1.
Substitute Demirovic then created the next chance for VfB. After a pass from Leweling, his shot sailed just over Manuel Neuer’s goal (72′). On the other end, Bredlow once again distinguished himself. After a long-range shot by Pavlovic, the goalkeeper quickly dove and made the save (77′).
Shortly afterward, however, even Bredlow was powerless. Olise sent a pass to Saibari, who, in front of the goal, squared the ball to the onrushing Pavlovic, who slotted it home to make it 4–1 (82′).
In the 85th minute, Diaz even had a chance to make it 5–1, but his chip went wide of the goal. Shortly afterward, the Colombian did better and, following an assist from Saibari, scored to make it 5–1.
With this result, FC Bayern sent a clear message right from the start and celebrated a decisive 5–1 victory over VfB Stuttgart.
