Tonight’s derby against Bayer Leverkusen is Bayern’s crucial game of the season so far. Knowing the fact that Julian Nagelsmann had two weeks to prepare everything and that both him and the players promised that after International Break there won’t be any „bad days“ after 4 matches in a row in the Bundesliga without a win.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen has simillar, if not worse situation. After they kept all their key players during the summer and signed talents like Adam Hlozek who was wanted by teams like Borrussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Fiorentina, everyone thought that they a roster with who they can compete in both Bundesliga and Champions League. Early DFB Pokal exit was seen as a potential good thing, knowing that schedule is tighter than ever before, but as of today, Leverkusen has only 2 victories this season. One in Bundesliga against Mainz and one in Champions League against Atletico Madrid. Except that all other results are shambolic including one really dissapointing one against Club Brugge in which they were clear favourites.
Regarding Bundesliga, there were some catastrophic losses, like one against TSG Hoffenheim in which they conceded 3 goals in first half, and 2:1 loss at home against Augsburg which you just can’t happen at your stadium if you are a team like Bayer is.
Same as Bayern, they have really good attacking structure but their finishing is not at the same peak as it was last season and aside of that they are also one of the teams who had the most shots faced in the Bundesliga, which can be a crucial thing for Bayern’s attack and no one should be suprised if Bayern puls off another goal spectacle like they did last October when they won 5:1 in Leverkusen and scored Five Goals in first half.
Their shining light this season is Jeremy Frimpong who is declaring himself as one of the most promising fullbacks in Europe’s top five leagues with his speed, attacking movement and recovery and it will be interesting to see him and Alphonso Davies face off.
It’s now or never for Julian Nagelsmann. If he delivers another shambolic peformance against a team who is one of the worst forms this season in whole Europe, then some questions should be asked in Bayern board.
