Jürgen Klopp is the new head coach of the German national team and is now tasked with turning things around at the DFB. The former coach of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC has the job of leading the team back to the top of the world.
And his first appearance has already sparked a lot of conversation. During his inaugural press conference, Klopp ignited a certain sense of euphoria.
“When you hear the reactions, you can already see that he’s sparking incredible euphoria just through his presence and demeanor. That’s something the country needs,” chief critic Didi Hamann told Sky.
Kahn puts the brakes on Klopp
Oliver Kahn takes a slightly different view. Not because he doesn’t believe Klopp is capable of bringing about profound changes, but because he sees a whole host of problems.
„Personally, I don’t think it’s as simple as many people imagine. I believe the problems run much deeper,“ Kahn told BRon the sidelines of a charity golf tournament .
First of all, some fundamental questions need to be answered: “What kind of players do we want to develop over the next few years? What kind of players do we want to have in the first place? How do we want to play soccer?”
Nevertheless, Klopp is “a very experienced man who can certainly make a difference,” Kahn said. In this regard, the opinion of the former FC Bayern goalkeeper—who also served as CEO of the record-holding champions after his playing career—aligns with that of other experts.
Still, it should be clear to everyone that the new head of the DFB won’t simply tweak a couple of things and thereby solve the fundamental problems in German soccer. The fact that he’s already receiving a lot of support from the start is an absolutely positive aspect. He’ll get started as early as September with the first international matches.
