Nagelsmann reveals he ‚was screaming‘ at the park when he was announced Bayern coach
Bayern Munich signed their dream coach last summer in Julian Nagelsmann. The 34-year-old moved from league rivals RB Leipzig to Munich and has now given a deeper insight into the spectacular transfer for the first time. Nagelsmann revealed that the joy at Bayern’s call had evaporated very quickly at the time, but he also reveals the joy when he was first announced.
When Hansi Flick announced his departure in April, the club immediately started looking for replacements. Julian Nagelsmann was on the top of Bayern’s wish list, as Hasan Salihamidzic himself revealed. But when the call came, Nagelsmann confirmed that he did not become that ‚enthusiastic‘ afterwards. The head coach tells in the Bayern podcast that „at first you are euphoric and happy that a club of this size, is interested in you.“
But then, the excitement is quickly gone: „But the very next moment, you’re already thinking about how you can tackle things, when you don’t have a release clause and you still have a long-term contract with your club like I did.“
„In other words, the euphoria is then evaporated relatively quickly by the objectivity of the contract and the situation.”
„I was screaming at the park and people were looking weirdly at me“
Julian Nagelsmann also says that he did not expect RB Leipzig to let him go that quickly. The talks went different than he ‚expected‘, he says. The coach was in contact with Leipzig’s CEO Oliver Mintzlaff and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, and Bayern kept continuing to fight for Nagelsmann. After several days of negotiations, the club finally paid what Leipzig asked. The fee is still not precise, with different sources publishing different amounts.
But Nagelsmann could not hide his excitement during that day. The head coach says that he told his wife that he wanted to go for a walk in the park. „I went to the park and fifteen minutes later, the official confirmation came from both sides. I started screaming at the park and people started looking weirdly at me“
