Leon Goretzka has finally made his first competitive appearance for Aston Villa. After leaving FC Bayern last summer, the 31-year-old had to wait a long time before he was able to take the field for his new club for the first time. His debut could hardly have gone better.
On Wednesday evening, Goretzka made his first appearance for the English Premier League club in a convincing 5-0 victory over Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the Champions League.
The former Bayern star moved to England in the summer of 2026. Prior to that, there had been widespread speculation about his future in the sport. Ultimately, the midfielder chose Aston Villa.
However, due to a prolonged break from competition, Goretzka had to wait a while for his debut.
Goretzka came on as a substitute in the rout
Against Fenerbahçe, the German national team player was not initially in the starting lineup. Coach Unai Emery initially kept the 31-year-old on the bench.
From there, Goretzka witnessed an impressive performance by his new team. By halftime, the English side was already leading 3–0.
Aston Villa didn’t let up after the break either, extending their lead to 5–0 by the 72nd minute.
In the 82nd minute, the moment finally arrived: Goretzka came on as a substitute, marking his first competitive appearance in a Villa jersey.
For the former Bayern pro, it was an important step back into competitive action after the long break.
Former Bayern Star Experiences Historic Evening

Particularly noteworthy: With their decisive victory over Fenerbahçe, Aston Villa set a new club record.
Never before had the English club won a European cup match by such a wide margin. This meant that Goretzka was part of a historic victory right from his debut.
Aston Villa’s start to the Champions League season is also impressive. Following a 3-2 opening-round victory over Club Brugge, the team has now secured its second win in its second match.
In total, Unai Emery’s team has already scored nine goals in its first two matches.
For Goretzka, however, this brief appearance is likely just the beginning. After his long break from competition, the focus will now be on gradually regaining match fitness and earning a regular spot on the team.
In any case, the first step has been taken. And it could hardly have gone better for the former Bayern star.
