FC Bayern played an away game against Viking Stavanger on Tuesday and struggled significantly against an aggressive Norwegian team. After the game, Vincent Kompany criticized his players.
The 3-3 draw in Norway was ultimately anything but ideal for the record champions, who had actually set their sights much higher. It was a game that had it all: a fierce underdog, a red card for Michael Olise, and, in the end, six goals.
The Norwegians played above their usual level at times, were tenacious, and managed to draw Bayern into numerous one-on-one battles. This ensured that Bayern’s rhythm was repeatedly disrupted.
Draw in Norway: Kompany Voices Criticism
After the game, Vincent Kompany, the coach of FC Bayern, was anything but in a good mood. “It’s our own fault. We made lapses in concentration. We weren’t smart—that was the case against Augsburg, and it was the case today too, where we conceded a goal right at the start,” the Belgian explained on Amazon Prime Video.
What particularly bothered Kompany was Michael Olise’s ejection; he received a second yellow card in a play where he threw the ball in the face of his opponent, who had been provoking him for a long time.
And then it became clear: „It was a bit of overconfidence. And the red card, of course, was just stupid. We make mistakes, but the team works hard and is always mentally there. But that makes it difficult to consistently win games, even when you’re completely dominant and aren’t playing badly the entire time. I don’t see a lack of energy either. Overall, this just can’t happen!”
Kompany also explained that he spoke directly with Olise. “Michael knows that. We’re very clear about things like this—we talk about them. Stuff like that just happens. Today isn’t a final or a semifinal, but moments like these are decisive in the season. I told him, ‘Today, the No. 10 was smarter than you,’“ said the Bayern coach after the game.
