João Palhinha’s future at FC Bayern remains uncertain. After a move to Aston Villa fell through, a new opportunity could now be opening up for the Portuguese player. Newcastle United is reported to have offered the midfielder a concrete three-year contract.
As reported by transfer journalist Diego Pico, João Palhinha could be headed to Newcastle United. According to the report, the Magpies have presented Palhinha with a three-year contract offer and are actively pursuing the signing of the 31-year-old. For Bayern, this could present a new opportunity in the short term to finally let the Portuguese player go.
That is precisely the Munich club’s current stance. Another loan appears to be out of the question for the record champions. Palhinha was already on loan to Tottenham Hotspur last season. The London club subsequently held a purchase option but did not exercise it.
At Säbener Straße, the club is determined not to loan out Palhinha again under any circumstances, but rather to sell him outright.
Aston Villa transfer has fallen through
Most recently, it looked as though Aston Villa might be the solution for Palhinha. The Premier League club had contacted FC Bayern and was exploring a loan deal. That is precisely why the deal has now apparently fallen through.
When asked about the rumors, sporting director Max Eberl said: “As you’ve read, Aston Villa contacted us about Joao. That’s correct, but we won’t be able to reach an agreement with Aston Villa,” the 52-year-old explained during the presentation of new signing Ismael Saibari.
When asked whether there was truly no realistic chance of reaching an agreement, the Bayern boss was even more explicit: “No chance of an agreement.”
This means the Aston Villa deal is off the table. The main reason is likely the differing views on the transfer model. While the English club apparently favored a loan, Bayern wants to sell Palhinha outright.
Newcastle could meet Bayern halfway
Newcastle could therefore be a much better fit for the record champions’ plans. The Magpies are reportedly willing to consider a permanent signing of the midfielder. A concrete offer to FC Bayern has apparently not yet been made. However, reports of a three-year contract suggest that Newcastle would be counting on Palhinha for the long term.
For Munich, a sale would be attractive for several reasons. Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham in 2024 for around 50 million euros, but was never able to establish himself there on a permanent basis.
If he is sold this summer, club officials are hoping for a transfer fee of around 25 million euros. At the same time, Bayern would save on the Portuguese player’s high salary if he were to leave.
On the field, Palhinha has no future under Vincent Kompany. Therefore, staying any longer would not benefit either the player or FC Bayern.
