Vincent Kompany has been repeatedly tipped as a possible successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City due to his strong work at FC Bayern, but Thomas Helmer does not believe the Belgian will be leaving Munich any time soon
In an interview with tz/Münchner Merkur, the former Bayern professional made it clear that he sees Kompany staying with the German record champions for the long term. „I believe that he is prepared to stay in Munich for longer, not just this year and then go straight to Manchester City,“ explained Helmer
However, the 1996 European champion did not want to completely rule out a later commitment to City. „Of course City is a big club for him, even as a former player. But step by step. There is still enough time for him to train at Manchester City at some point in the future, but not now,“ Helmer continued
Kompany has close ties to the Skyblues
Between 2008 and 2019, the Belgian played more than 350 competitive matches for Manchester City and won numerous titles, where he developed into one of the defining figures in the club’s history under Pep Guardiola
Kompany is now also highly regarded at FC Bayern. The Belgian came to Munich from Burnley FC in the summer of 2024 – which came as a surprise at the time and was not the absolute ideal solution for those in charge
But Kompany quickly made a name for himself, and Munich extended his contract early until 2029 last October – a clear sign of confidence
„Everyone loves him in Germany“

Helmer is particularly impressed by Kompany’s interaction with the team: „Kompany is a friend of the players and is always honest in press conferences. Direct, but fair. He never gets angry,“ explained the former international
Above all, his calm manner is very well received at FC Bayern: „He is a very calm presenter and in Munich there is the feeling that he really is a team colleague and a team leader,“ said Helmer
The ex-Bayern professional also sees the development under Kompany as extremely positive in sporting terms „Everyone in Germany loves him and also the way Bayern Munich play soccer, which is really very unusual,“ said Helmer
Despite the discussions following the Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain, Kompany remains undisputed internally
It therefore seems clear that Manchester City will continue to keep a close eye on the name Vincent Kompany – but there are currently many indications that the Belgian clearly sees his future at FC Bayern.
